Brochures can be printed both digitally or using the lithographic printing press. In general, lower volume runs are more cost effective if printed digitally. Higher volume runs can work out very cost effective per unit.
Brochures can take many formats. Below are some of the most common types of brochure design. I have used a case study of some work I have completed for YMCA Cork to show how different brochure types are used.
YMCA Cork, STEP programme, induction brochure design
Corporate brochures are often either saddle-stitched(stapled) or perfect bound (glued) together with a cover and inner pages. A tip when creating a brochure like this is that the number of pages should be divisable by 4 in order to get the print layout to work. These can be digitally printed or printed on the lithography press depending on the volume of brochures. A4 and A5 brochures, both portrait and landscape are regular sizes for this type of brochure.

Leaflets are single page flyers. These are often handed out at events for promotional purposes of a single product or service. Regular formats for leaflets are A5 or DL sizes and can be a low cost way to communicate your message to customers in person where the footfall is high.

RedFM brochure design
Flyers are folded versions of leaflets and can be a clever way of making the millimeters of print count. As an example an A4 page can fold into a 6 page DL leaflet, allowing you to have 6 DL pages of information on a double sided A4 when folded using a trifold format. There are different types of fold for flyers such as a gate fold, or bifold.

Brochures with a pocket design can be a great way of updating information that changes for different customers or information that varies over time such as pricelists by keeping a permanent folder design and adding variable information in the

Multi function brochure designs can have information for two aspects of your business or two different languages through placing each function on the opposite side of the layout so that one appears upside down. This type of brochure is often used to communicate multi-lingual information such as for government bodies.
When I qualified as a Graphic Design graduate, I spent my first year working on the technical side of print as a ‘prepress operator’ working with everything from a single large format poster to a run of 3 million leaflets. I was responsible for making up keylines, making 4 colour and spot colour plates, laying out large book projects for print, and ensuring the set up of various finishes was to the correct specification. I was also directly involved with finishing the jobs on the print floor. This was where I got my broad knowledge of print design, and I can prepare your print file to any specification that you need for your project.
